Concepción/Anti-Concepción

Concepción/Anti-Concepción is an installation in the exhibit titled, “El Milagro” (the miracle), addressing the miraculous, religious, and mystical in Latin America. The cabinet covered in gold baroque stenciled uterus design, birth control pills, and pregnancy test sticks, had doors the public could open to reveal natural cures for conception or anti-conception. Designed for indecisive women regarding to birth or not to birth. The multimedia installation included a video of La Virgen experiencing the immaculate conception with music by Vivaldi, "Stabat Mater dolorosa"- a 13th Century Catholic sorrowful hymn to suffering Mary as she loses her son, Jesus Christ. The confessional on the side had recorded confessions sharing women’s stories struggling with childbirth, miscarriages, infertility, and fertility.
